The Origin Story

The Pompeii Seed

What if your life had hidden threads you couldn't see?

Beneath the surface of your scattered days — your griefs, your discoveries, your quiet moments of wonder — something is being woven. Most of us never see it. Book of Life was built so you could.

Where the inquiry began

James Baskind

James Baskind studied East Asian religion at Yale and has spent twenty years in Japan — reading Buddhist texts in Chinese, sitting with Zen masters, and studying the world's religious and contemplative traditions in depth, tracing the threads that connect them to the deepest questions of human experience.

Along the way, he came to recognize what we all know down deep: awareness itself is the ground of everything. Not the contents of a life, but the awareness that holds them. Consciousness as substratum. The light through which all things are seen.

From that single insight — sustained across an extensive and varied published oeuvre — came the seed of Book of Life.

If awareness is primary, then every moment you have ever lived is not merely "past." It is encoded. Resonant. Waiting to be woven into the pattern only your life can make.

Every Life Has a Pattern

We believe every life contains patterns of meaning waiting to be discovered. Book of Life uses AI to find what you can't see yourself — the threads that connect your scattered moments into a constellation.

"Nothing you've lived is ever lost."

Ancient Roots, Modern Light

The Buddhist concept of ālaya-vijñāna — the storehouse consciousness — holds that every experience leaves a trace. Nothing is discarded. The Kabbalistic reshimu teaches the same: even after a vessel shatters, the impression of light remains.

In Japan, the festival of Tanabata honors Orihime, the celestial weaver who spins the threads of stars into patterns of meaning. Every July, the world looks up and sees a sky woven with connection.

Book of Life is the meeting point of all these traditions: East and West, ancient and digital, the sacred and the everyday. A technology built not despite its spiritual roots, but because of them.

"Looking up at the night sky
and realizing it's looking back."

This is what Book of Life makes possible — not just a record of your days, but a recognition: you are not scattered. You are a constellation. Every moment you have lived has been reaching toward a pattern you were always becoming.

The Thread Engine™ simply helps you see it.
